Vomiting and diarrhea are common symptoms in our canines. Dogs eat all sorts of things, such as rubbish and inedible items (e.g. toys), so it is not surprising that their tummies feel upset from time to time. Many dogs will experience vomiting or diarrhea (or one of these symptoms) at least a few times in their lives. Most cases will resolve quickly, while others may be more serious.

How to Stop Your Dog From Vomiting at Home?

Antibiotics and antiemetics that your dog needs can be given in less serious cases.

What to Give a Dog with Diarrhea and Vomiting?

After a dog has vomited, it's essential to withhold food and water for at least a few hours to give the digestive system a chance to settle down. The amount of time required to withhold food and water depends on the severity and frequency of vomiting.

Once the vomiting has stopped, you can gradually reintroduce water in small amounts. If the water stays down, you can offer a small amount of bland food, such as freeze-dried chicken or white rice mixed with plain canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling), as this can help soothe the stomach.

It's important to note that the food should be bland, low in fat, and easy to digest. Avoid giving your dog any rich or fatty foods, as they can irritate the stomach further. Also, it's best to feed your dog small, frequent meals throughout the day, rather than one large meal. If vomiting continues, or if you notice any other concerning symptoms, it's always best to consult with a veterinarian.

Home Treatment for Diarrhoea in Dogs

If your dog is healthy and behaving normally, ask your vet if you can treat him at home.

Here are some basic home care instructions: After 12 hours of continuous fasting, but not water, if the diarrhea improves and there is no vomiting, lethargy or other symptoms, offer a small amount of light food such as an equal amount of cooked chicken breast, sweet potato or pumpkin every 2 to 4 hours. If you have probiotics at home, you can mix them in a small amount of water for your dog to help regulate bowel movement. If diarrhea persists or recurs, seek veterinary help immediately.
