Albendazole (Puainta®) for Dogs

As a responsible dog owner, it's natural to be concerned about your furry friend's health and well-being. When it comes to treating parasitic infections in dogs, albendazole is a medication that may come to mind. Albendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic drug used in veterinary medicine, primarily for livestock. 

It was first introduced in the 1970s and was included in the World Health Organization's list of essential medicines. It is becoming more common in veterinary use. Whether it is an anthelmintic used by your veterinarian depends on a variety of factors, as other antiparasitics may be used.

What is Albendazole for Dogs?

Albendazole is an anthelmintic medication used for the treatment and prevention of various parasitic infections in dogs. It belongs to a class of drugs known as benzimidazoles, which are effective against a wide range of internal parasites. It works by disrupting the parasite's ability to absorb glucose, thereby inhibiting its energy production and leading to its eventual demise. Since it can pass into the blood, it can kill worms which are lodged outside of the intestine after being ingested orally. This includes lungworm and heartworm, as well as those affecting other organs such as the liver.  It shares this group with other better-known antiparasitic products such as praziquantel and fenbendazole. Since these types of antiparasitic drug have been on the market, other benzimidazoles have been developed which are increasingly effective, safe and specific to certain parasites.

Albendazole vs Fenbendazole

Spectrum of Activity:

Albendazole: It has broad-spectrum activity against a variety of parasites, including roundworms, tapeworms, and flukes. It is effective against both intestinal and tissue-dwelling parasites.
Fenbendazole: It primarily targets gastrointestinal parasites, such as roundworms, whipworms, hookworms, and some tapeworms. It is commonly used in veterinary medicine but can also be used to treat certain parasitic infections in humans.

Uses:

Albendazole: It is used to treat infections caused by parasites such as ascariasis, hookworm, whipworm, pinworm, threadworm, strongyloidiasis, and certain types of tapeworms. It may also be used in the treatment of hydatid disease (caused by Echinococcus tapeworms) and neurocysticercosis (caused by pork tapeworm larvae in the brain). Schistosoma lung is a parasitic organism called trematode, which is quite common in dogs in North America and is called Paragonimus kellicotti. Albendazole is widely used to treat this infection.

Fenbendazole: It is primarily used in veterinary medicine to treat parasitic infections in animals. 

How Does Albendazole Work?

Albendazole acts by inhibiting metabolism and preventing the formation of microtubules in the parasite. Microtubules are involved in a variety of cellular processes, including maintenance of structural integrity, transport of cellular components, and cell division. Albendazole disrupts microtubule assembly, which interferes with the normal cellular activities of the parasite, including their ability to move, feed, and reproduce, thereby killing the parasite.

How to Take Albendazole for Deworming?

 Albendazole is available in tablet form and is typically taken orally. The dosage will depend on various factors, including the type of infection being treated and your body weight. It's important to follow the prescribed dosage and duration of treatment recommended by your healthcare professional.

Internal deworming is recommended every 3-4 months for adult dogs and must be done more frequently during the first few months of life and is recommended for puppies 0-3 months and repeated every 15 days until the vaccination schedule is complete and always prior to any vaccinations. for dogs 3-12 months, deworm every 2 months.

If worms are present in stool after taking albendazole, deworming needs to be done every 15 days until worms are no longer present in the stool.

Albendazole Dosage for Dogs

Always follow the dosing instructions provided with the product. The dosage of albendazole for dogs can vary depending on the specific parasite being treated, the dog's weight, and the veterinarian's discretion. It is typically administered orally in tablet or suspension form.

When Not to Use Albendazole?

It is generally recommended to avoid using Albendazole in nursing dogs unless specifically advised by a veterinarian.
Dogs with severe liver or kidney disease may have reduced drug metabolism and excretion capabilities. In such cases, Albendazole should be used cautiously, and the dosage may need adjustment or an alternative treatment option may be considered.

What Foods to Avoid While Taking Albendazole?

Fatty or high-fat foods

Albendazole is better absorbed when taken with a high-fat meal, as it increases its bioavailability. However, excessively fatty meals may delay the absorption of the medication. It is generally recommended to consume a moderate amount of fat with your Albendazole dose.

High-fiber foods

Foods rich in fiber, such as whole grains, legumes, and certain fruits and vegetables, can affect the absorption of Albendazole. They may reduce its effectiveness by interfering with its absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. However, completely avoiding high-fiber foods is not necessary. It is recommended to separate the intake of high-fiber foods from Albendazole doses by a few hours.

Dairy products

Calcium-rich foods and dairy products, such as milk, cheese, and yogurt, can impair the absorption of Albendazole. These foods contain calcium, which can bind to Albendazole and reduce its effectiveness. It is advisable to separate the consumption of dairy products from Albendazole doses by a few hours.

How Long Do Albendazole Side Effects Last?

Common side effects of albendazole in dogs may include:

Gastrointestinal upset: This can include symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite. In most cases, these side effects are mild and resolve within a few days. However, if the symptoms persist or worsen, it is important to consult your veterinarian.

Lethargy or weakness: Some dogs may experience temporary lethargy or weakness after taking albendazole. This side effect is usually short-lived and should resolve within a day or two.

Allergic reactions: Although rare, some dogs may develop an allergic reaction to albendazole. Signs of an allergic reaction can include itching, swelling, hives, difficulty breathing, or collapse. If you observe any of these symptoms, it is crucial to seek immediate veterinary care.
